Seamless Driving with the BYD Sealion 6: Is Fun Still a Priority in Plug-In Hybrids?

    BYD Sealion 6
PROS ›› Quiet, composed, efficient, refined CONS ›› Plain looks, uninspired feel, flat seats

Plug-in hybrids are increasingly popular across various global markets, and my recent experience with the BYD Sealion 6 clarifies this trend. This model stands out not only for its technology but also for its impressive performance and value.

The Sealion 6 is part of BYD’s expanding Ocean Series lineup, which also features models like the Seagull, Dolphin, Seal, and the larger Sealion 7. While its journey might not take it to the U.S. market, it has made a notable impact in Western regions, particularly following its transformation from the Song Plus in China in 2020 and subsequent facelift in 2023.

In Australia, the Sealion 6 has emerged not only as the most affordable plug-in hybrid SUV but also as the best-selling PHEV. Its appeal goes well beyond pricing.

BYD offers the Sealion 6 in four distinct configurations, commencing with the Essential model, priced at AU$42,990 ($27,900), and extending to variants such as the Sealion 6 Dynamic Extended (AU$46,990 / $30,500), the Premium (AU$52,990 / $34,400), and the Premium Extended, which also starts at AU$52,990 but features a larger battery.

Both the Essential and Dynamic models share a powertrain, incorporating a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine paired with an 18.3 kWh battery and electric motor. This configuration yields a combined output of 160 kW (214 hp) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, enabling a respectable 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds for the Essential and 8.9 seconds for the Dynamic variant.

For those desiring enhanced performance, the Premium and Premium Extended models come equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter engine alongside dual electric motors, producing 238 kW (319 hp) and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft). The Premium completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 5.9 seconds, while the Extended variant achieves it in a mere 5.5 seconds.

Direct competitors to the Sealion 6 include popular models such as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, Cherry Tiggo 7, and GWM Haval H6 GT.

    A Cabin With Quirks

Despite being the entry-level Essential model, the Sealion 6’s interior exudes a surprising sense of luxury. There are design elements borrowed from other BYD models, but also some unique touches. The steering wheel, while comfortable, lacks an appealing design compared to the other interior features.

The Essential model features a 12.8-inch rotating infotainment screen centrally positioned on the dashboard, complemented by a 12.3-inch display for additional functionality. Although this screen is smaller than the 15.6-inch version available in premium variants and the more advanced Sealion 7 EV, it serves its purpose well.

Standard features include seamless compatibility with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, enhanced by an advanced voice assistant and the option for over-the-air updates. The interior also combines plush leather with metallic accents, yet the piano black plastic trim can sometimes feel overly ornate.

A small electronic shifter, metal toggle buttons, and a volume dial add to the modern aesthetic. The seats, clad in brown leather with contrasting accents, are comfortable but do lack headrest adjustments, which can be a drawback.

A six-speaker audio system is standard in the Essential, albeit lacking in volume and clarity; an upgrade to the Premium model is necessary for an enhanced audio experience.

While interior space is adequate for adult passengers, the cargo space measures at 425 liters (15 cubic feet) with the seats up, expanding to 1,440 liters (50.5 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded. This configuration, however, does not lay completely flat, which could be a drawback for families requiring ample storage. Moreover, the petite rear window slightly compromises visibility.

    A Smooth Cruiser

In 2024, BYD achieved impressive sales, moving nearly 2.5 million plug-in hybrids around the globe. This accomplishment further establishes the company’s expertise in crafting smooth and efficient PHEV powertrains.

When the battery is fully charged, the Sealion 6 operates primarily on electric power, delivering impressive efficiency at around 1.4 l/100 km (168 US mpg). This means that daily drivers covering less than 100 km (62 miles) can enjoy excellent efficiency without the anxiety typically associated with electric vehicles.

Once the battery runs low, the petrol engine kicks in, with an average fuel consumption of 5.6 l/100 km (42 US mpg), which, while commendable for its category, does not outperform conventional hybrids significantly. A fully charged battery combined with a full tank can propel the Sealion 6 up to 1,092 km (678 miles).

What stands out about the powertrain is its seamless operation. The Sealion 6 feels like an EV under most conditions, engaging the petrol engine primarily under hard acceleration or at higher speeds. There’s also regenerative braking, yet lacks the one-pedal driving experience offered by some rivals.

BYD’s DM-i hybrid system operates efficiently, leveraging the engine as a generator or facilitating a traditional hybrid experience where both the electric motor and petrol engine cooperate in delivering power.

Additionally, the incorporation of a single-speed reduction gear enhances drive quality by minimizing power interruptions typical in conventional transmissions.

Though the Essential model is front-wheel drive, it exhibits negligible torque steer thanks to the instantaneous power delivery from the electric motors, ensuring a driving experience that’s smooth and responsive.

However, the Sealion 6 may not be tailored for spirited driving enthusiasts. The model leans significantly towards family comfort, emphasizing a soft suspension which initially garnered criticism for being too floaty. For 2025, this has been improved to achieve a balance between comfort and stability at higher speeds.

The steering is designed to be light and direct, making the Sealion 6 a user-friendly option for daily commutes.

    Verdict

BYD continues to sharpen its competitive edge, with the Sealion 6 remaining relevant in a fast-evolving automotive landscape. While its design may not turn heads, it competes with other mid-size SUVs like the Kia Sportage and Toyota RAV4, which also lean towards a more utilitarian aesthetic.

The emphasis on a quiet, smooth-driving experience is a significant highlight of its plug-in hybrid technology. Although the trunk space may be less than ideal for larger families, it effectively meets the needs of those with smaller children or teens.

Overall, the BYD Sealion 6 emerges as a solid contender in the PHEV market, marrying efficiency with an experience that appeals to everyday drivers.
