Audi’s New Electric Hatchback Revives A2 Charm for Modern Drivers

    Audi

Audi is making significant strides in the electric vehicle (EV) market with a new entry-level model currently undergoing testing. This upcoming model is expected to indirectly replace the A1 and Q2 when they are phased out next year, marking a pivotal moment for the brand.

The new EV is poised to be Audi’s smallest car, targeting a competitive landscape that includes the BMW iX1 and the forthcoming second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA EV. Positioned cleverly to appeal to urban drivers looking for a compact and efficient solution, this model represents Audi’s commitment to expanding its electric portfolio.

Recently captured by the keen lenses of Autocar’s spy photographers, the prototype reveals a design that is reminiscent of the Q4 e-tron but also pays homage to the classic A2 model from 1999-2005. This blend of modern and nostalgic design cues aims to attract both new customers and loyal Audi enthusiasts alike.

Interestingly, because this new EV does not serve as a direct replacement for an existing model, Audi might choose a fresh name for the vehicle. Industry speculation even suggests that the nameplate A2 could see a revival, reflecting Audi’s strategy of tapping into its historical branding to resonate with consumers.

Audi CEO Gernot Döllner previously hinted at the possibility of reviving classic names, stating it is “thinkable” for the brand to reassign historic models. This approach could breathe new life into established nomenclature while introducing cutting-edge technology.

Technical specifications remain somewhat elusive; however, it is anticipated that the new EV will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. This versatile foundation also underpins various electric models, including the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Q4 e-tron, suggesting a reliable performance baseline for the new Audi offering.

In terms of dimensions, the new model is expected to straddle the line between a hatchback and a crossover, likely mirroring the size of Škoda’s Elroq. Such positioning could enable the vehicle to deliver an engaging driving experience while maintaining practicality for daily use.

Equipped with options for battery packs ranging between 58kWh to 79kWh, the Elroq can achieve impressive ranges—up to 360 miles per charge in its most efficient iteration. The sporty vRS variant boasts an output of 335bhp, offering performance enthusiasts a compelling reason to consider electric vehicles.

In contrast to the Elroq, the new Audi vehicle will occupy a premium niche within this growing segment. Döllner has previously asserted that “not many brands in the world can,” but Audi has the potential to deliver a true premium offering in the A-segment, setting high expectations for what’s to come.
