Discover The Surprising Range Of A Nissan Leaf Limo With Dual Batteries When Running On Empty

Imagine a first-generation Nissan Leaf—known primarily for its compact size and urban utility—transformed into a luxurious stretch limousine. After spending years in the bright lights of Las Vegas, this vehicle has undergone a remarkable upgrade with a secondary high-voltage battery. The intriguing question for many is: how far can this dual-battery Nissan Leaf limo travel once the gauge cluster indicates zero miles?

    Dual Battery Setup

Kyle Conner from Out of Spec Testing set out to answer this question with an innovative twist. His ex-Las Vegas Nissan Leaf limo is now enhanced by a second 24 kWh battery, adding to the original pack. The first battery is mounted on a custom-built rack within the vehicle, while the additional battery is fitted snugly in the cradle under the floor. Both batteries are wired in parallel, theoretically enhancing the limo’s driving range.

    The Testing Process

The real test? To find out how far the dual-battery setup can push the limits after indicating an empty charge, all while running the climate control system at speeds between 30 to 50 mph. The experience is particularly relevant for consumers interested in maximizing the capabilities of older electric vehicles.

Approximately seven miles after the low battery warning activated, the limo entered what’s known as “turtle mode.” In this restricted mode, acceleration is severely limited, but the vehicle maintains a steady pace of 30 mph with the accelerator to the floor. Remarkably, even after entering turtle mode, the limo traveled an additional five miles, eventually covering a total distance of 18.9 miles after hitting zero on the gauge.

    Efficiency and Longevity

The recorded energy efficiency was significant at 4.1 miles per kilowatt-hour, although the average speed rounded out to just above 30 mph. This example underscores the range capabilities possible with older battery technology, particularly in a unique setup like this one.

Another vital aspect to consider is battery health. The older batteries don’t feature an advanced thermal management system, raising questions about their charging resilience. Despite these concerns, the limo was able to charge successfully from a mobile power station equipped with a CCS to CHAdeMO adapter. This outcome illustrates the versatility and durability of the aging Leaf model, even in an unconventional form.

    Key Takeaways for Consumers

While the results of this test may not directly apply to most Nissan Leaf owners—after all, how many people possess a dual-battery first-generation Leaf?—it provides valuable insights into the performance and reliability of older electric vehicles. Most importantly, it suggests that even when the gauge reads empty, there may still be mileage left in the tank, allowing drivers to reach a nearby charger in an emergency.

    Conclusion

In the evolving world of electric vehicles, this Nissan Leaf limo stands out not just for its size but for its unique engineering and demonstrated longevity. It serves as a reminder that innovation doesn’t only rest on brand new models. Older electric vehicles can still surprise, showcasing resilience and utility long after their original specs suggest they’re out of commission.
