Jaguar finds itself in a challenging situation. Recently, the brand underwent an ambitious rebranding effort that hasn’t been warmly embraced by fans and consumers alike. Adding to the confusion was the introduction of a radical concept car that left many scratching their heads. Yet, despite the criticism, Jaguar forges ahead with its bold new strategy and is in the process of prepping the production version of the Type 00, which is expected to hit the market within the next few years.

Jaguar’s first new model in over a decade is being billed as a high-end, ultra-premium electric vehicle (EV) with a six-figure price tag. This luxury sedan is set to go head-to-head with illustrious rivals like Bentley and Rolls-Royce, proving that Jaguar is not shying away from the competitive landscape.

We’re eagerly anticipating the potential rollout of the production Type 00 by the end of this year, with it officially going on sale likely for the 2026 or 2027 model year. While many details remain under wraps, there are some exciting insights already available on what we can expect from this next evolution of Jaguar.

So, what does the Type 00 represent? In its initial presentation, Jaguar introduced the concept with the intriguing name “Type 00.” While it’s uncertain whether this name will stick for the production version, speculations abound. Some insiders whisper that it might be rebranded as the “I-Type,” harkening back to Jaguar’s previous electric model, the I-Pace.

The Type 00 concept itself gave us a bold glimpse into Jaguar’s vision of a luxury sedan. We may not see a direct translation from concept to production, but the final version will undoubtedly retain several of its striking design elements. Imagine a sleek, flat front end with a faux grille, a slender light strip adorning the back, and a chiseled profile featuring an angular C-pillar that lends itself to a fastback aesthetic. Jaguar has been testing prototypes, some of which have no rear windows, and while it’s unclear if this unique feature will make the cut, there’s a lot to look forward to.

Jaguar’s ambitious vision for the Type 00 is clear, even at the risk of alienating some customers. The brand’s executives have proclaimed loud and clear that this model will look like “nothing you’ve ever seen.” As Gerry McGovern, Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer, shares, this vehicle will be the cornerstone for a new family of Jaguars that undertake a bold artistic direction.

When it comes to size, we can expect this model to be quite substantial. Targeting luxury sedans like the Rolls-Royce Ghost/Spectre and the Cadillac Celestiq, the Type 00 is designed to command presence, likely measuring up similarly to its competitors, which often exceed 215 inches in length.

Step inside the Type 00, and you’ll find a minimalist yet luxurious environment. The concept featured expansive, foldable screens across the dashboard, separated by a striking brass “spine.” Rich materials like high-grade wood and wool adorned the interiors, though it’s still a mystery how much of this opulence will continue into the final production model.

There have been whispers about the Type 00 boasting an impressive 986 horsepower—a statement that holds allied advantages like varying performance configurations. With a fully electric design, we anticipate a large battery beneath the vehicle’s floor and dual electric motors. The I-Pace had a 90.0-kilowatt-hour battery, but Jaguar is expected to push the boundaries even further for the Type 00, possibly offering capabilities closer to competitors with their larger battery systems.

Jaguar has assured enthusiasts that their forthcoming EV will deliver a range of at least 430 miles on the WLTP cycle, with the U.S. figures likely being slightly lower. With rapid charging capabilities, drivers might be able to add around 200 miles of range in just 15 minutes—ideal for those on the go.

An exciting aspect of Jaguar’s new venture is the intention to transfer cutting-edge Formula E technology directly to its road cars. As Rawdon Glover, Jaguar’s Managing Director, puts it, Formula E enables a direct technological transfer that promises road-going innovations based on racetrack performance.

With Jaguar elevating its market position, the price tags on its vehicles are expected to rise significantly. Competing against high-end brands like Bentley, Cadillac, and Rolls-Royce inevitably means setting a price point that reflects this upscale persona. Early estimates suggest that the Type 00 could start at over £100,000 (approximately $135,000), and prices will climb steeply from there—considering that models like the Bentley Flying Spur start at over $275,000 and higher-end variants of Rolls-Royce exceed $400,000.

As Jaguar gears up for the Type 00’s production launch, it’s poised to unveil this exciting new chapter in late 2023 or into 2024, making it one of the most anticipated entries for the 2027 model year. The trajectory Jaguar has set clearly indicates its commitment to carving out an indelible mark within the ultra-premium EV landscape. The journey ahead may be tough, but for Jaguar, it’s about more than just cars; it’s about reimagining luxury for the modern age.
