Uber Drivers Go Electric But Face Charging Challenges On The Road

Uber drivers are undergoing a significant shift in their concerns about electric vehicles (EVs). As it turns out, charging accessibility has overtaken the cost of owning an EV as the primary worry for many drivers on the platform. To address this growing issue, Uber has hired Rebecca Tinucci, the former head of Tesla’s charging infrastructure, recognizing that effective solutions are urgently needed. This move comes in response to a significant increase in EV adoption among its driver base—around 60%—and the evident necessity for reliable charging options.

The cost of EVs is becoming less of a barrier for many, particularly as prices for used EVs become more appealing to everyday drivers, including those relying on gig economy jobs. Sure, the average price of a new electric vehicle might still give some hesitation, but the market is finally reaching a sweet spot where affordability becomes less of a factor for drivers. Unfortunately, there’s still that one critical issue hanging over everyone’s heads: “Where do I plug it in?”

Surveys conducted by Uber reveal a stark reality: access to chargers has emerged as the chief concern for drivers considering making the switch to electric. This isn’t just about finding a public charging station; it’s also about the absence of home charging solutions. Only about one-third of Uber’s EV drivers in the U.S. have the convenience of charging their vehicles at home. This is a substantial shortfall if you think about it—most EV charging happens at home, and this lack of access presents a real challenge for those who do the driving day in and day out.

Consider this for a moment: if you’re renting an apartment and driving long hours for your gig, it’s frustrating to think you can’t simply plug in your vehicle when you need to, especially if installing an EV charger isn’t in the cards for you. It’s a tough spot to be in, and Uber understands how crucial it is to solve this dilemma.

To tackle these pressing concerns, Tinucci is driving the initiative at Uber. At Tesla, she led efforts to expand their Supercharging network, so she possesses a wealth of expertise in addressing infrastructure needs. In her new role, she’s already made significant strides—within just nine months, she formed partnerships expected to enhance charging accessibility for 55,000 drivers across major cities like London, Boston, and Phoenix. Tinucci is also rolling out tools to help 40 cities in determining optimal locations for new charging stations. “We’ve got to get to work,” she emphasizes, recognizing the complexity behind effective charging solutions.

Uber’s drivers present an ideal customer base for charging networks. As frequent drivers, their travel patterns are predictable, meaning they are likely to utilize charging stations in a consistent manner. With a worldwide total of 230,000 EV drivers registered on its platform—a notable 60% increase from early last year—it’s clear that the urgency around improving charging access is only growing.

The company has learned from past investments, such as when it allocated $6.8 million to install over 700 EV chargers in a borough in London where many of its drivers reside. The usage of these chargers doubled compared to the national average, affirming that a targeted approach can yield positive results.

Now, as Uber takes its plan global, the company believes it is nearing 60% of the necessary coverage area needed to support its EV drivers. They have also developed the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Estimator to project the future demand for charging solutions.

With daunting competition from self-driving technology on the horizon, Uber is strategically ensuring its existing framework, inhabited by real human drivers, is robust. They have partnered with Waymo to enhance their technological capabilities while also ensuring that their current driver community feels well-supported and valued. After all, these drivers are the backbone of the service that keeps everything running smoothly.
