    Americans are known for their love of larger vehicles, reflecting a penchant for oversized homes and hearty portions. The automotive market has responded to this appetite, showcasing SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, which stretches well over 18 feet. Now, it appears that Volvo may be on the verge of entering this competitive full-size SUV segment in the United States.

    During a recent media briefing in Stockholm on January 22, Volvo Cars CEO Håkan Samuelsson discussed the company’s interest in developing a larger three-row SUV. This vehicle would ideally position itself above the existing XC90, taking on formidable rivals such as the Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS, and BMW X7, with the latter reportedly preparing for an even larger model, the X9.

    While no decisions have been officially made, Samuelsson confirmed, “Bigger SUVs – that is something we’re looking into.” He emphasized that the project is still in the inquiry phase, with no formal approval in place.

    Analyzing the American Market

    These discussions are part of a broader reevaluation of Volvo’s long-term strategies, especially concerning the American market, where the demand for spacious, three-row SUVs shows no signs of waning. Additionally, this interest aligns with rising consumer trends in China, where large premium family vehicles are similarly in demand.

    Recent reports indicate that approximately 11% of users trading in their EX90 moved towards a full-size SUV, marking a significant shift in consumer behavior. It would be a missed opportunity for Volvo to overlook this trend, particularly as dealers are requesting models that better meet this growing consumer base. Notably, Volvo hinted at a larger SUV model back in 2020, indicating prior consideration on this front.

    Future Production Considerations

    While fully assessing its product lineup, Volvo is also focusing on the development of a next-generation plug-in hybrid at its South Carolina manufacturing facility. This plant not only produces the EX90 and Polestar 3 but is expected to roll out the XC60 in 2027, followed by a new hybrid model in 2028.

    Samuelsson hinted that the upcoming hybrid could potentially serve as a flagship model, stating, “It’s very attractive for U.S. customers,” and suggesting it could take the form of a larger SUV. Current expectations point towards an extended-range hybrid system, which may offer around 100 miles of solely electric driving, described by Samuelsson as providing an experience akin to an electric vehicle with rapid acceleration and a quiet ride.

    Existing Blueprints for a Full-Size SUV

    The prospective XC100, or whatever name Volvo ultimately selects for this SUV, may utilize the existing SPA2 architecture or leverage technology from its parent company, Geely. The Geely premium electric vehicle brand, Zeekr, has already made strides with the introduction of its three-row 9X SUV, launched in 2025, suggesting possibilities for shared components or technology.

    This model is built on the 900-volt SEA-S platform and boasts a commendable electric range of 236 miles, with rapid charging capabilities that can boost battery life from 20% to 80% in just 10 minutes. Higher-end trims of the 9X showcase impressive performance figures, reaching outputs of 1,381 horsepower through a combination of a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and three electric motors.

    At approximately 206.2 inches in length, 79.8 inches in width, and 71.6 inches in height, the Zeekr 9X firmly places itself in the full-size SUV category. For reference, the Cadillac Escalade measures around 211.9 inches, with its ESV variant extending to a staggering 227 inches. The dimensions of the 9X indicate that it could easily form the foundation for Volvo’s potential larger SUV.

    As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, the prospect of a new, luxurious, three-row SUV from Volvo sparks interest. Balancing the demands of the American market with their commitment to sustainability and European design will undoubtedly influence the direction this endeavor takes. As consumer preferences shift, Volvo’s ability to adapt and innovate will be key in carving out a niche in this burgeoning segment.
