Why G-Wagon Owners Might Rethink Their Choice: The Game-Changing 2026 Lexus GX 550

    2026 Lexus GX 550

The 2026 Lexus GX 550 is not just a mere refresh; it completely redefines what we expect from this iconic nameplate. Although it shares its foundation with the 250-series Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, it clearly distinguishes itself as a superior option. The GX 550 deserves to be discussed alongside luxury stalwarts like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Land Rover Defender, especially for those who desire an SUV capable of serious off-road adventures.

Lexus demonstrates unyielding confidence with the GX 550 Sports Luxury. It not only honors the legacy of its predecessor but ventures into new territory that may attract buyers away from the flagship LX.

    QUICK FACTS

    The Range

Three different versions of the GX 550 are available in Australia, where we conducted this test. The base model GX 550 Luxury starts at AU$133,680 (approximately $88,400), all-inclusive of on-road fees. If you’re looking for something sportier, the GX 550 Sports Luxury we tested is priced at AU$147,012 ($97,200). An off-road-focused variant, the Overtrail, starts at AU$140,662 ($93,000).

In the United States, the range mirrors this structure, beginning at $66,935 for the Premium, $79,400 for the Luxury, and $74,580 for the Overtrail.

The GX 550 is built on Toyota’s GA-F platform, shared with models like the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, and larger 300-series Land Cruiser. This body-on-frame design is crafted for comfort on various terrains. Lexus employs varying thicknesses of steel for side rails and cross members to enhance ride quality over bumps.

The GX 550 features double-wishbone suspension up front and a 4-link rigid suspension at the back. Both the Sports Luxury and Overtrail variants come equipped with adaptive-variable suspension, which uses advanced electronics to manage dampening force across all four corners.

Let’s talk about performance. While the previous model was equipped with a 4.6-liter naturally-aspirated V8, the GX 550 now boasts a 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6, producing 260 kW (349 hp) and an impressive 479 lb-ft (650 Nm) of torque. This engine is one of the standout features of the new model.

    Bold Looks

Before we delve into the cabin, let’s discuss the striking exterior design. The sharp lines and bold contours of the new GX 550 make it, in my opinion, the most visually appealing SUV in either the Toyota or Lexus lineup. Dressed in a deep shade of green, our press vehicle exuded charisma, making every drive feel like an event.

    A Proper Lexus Cabin

The interior of the GX is a far cry from the Land Cruiser it’s based on. It has been thoroughly modernized to match its luxury price point.

A large digital instrument cluster greets you alongside a massive 14-inch central display featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This setup mirrors other Lexus models and responds to inputs with impressive speed. It’s nice to see the screen incorporated into the dashboard rather than mounted awkwardly.

One drawback, however, is that the software still feels somewhat limited in functionality and responsiveness.

Sports Luxury models come with semi-aniline leather-accented seating, giving a truly premium feel. Additional luxurious touches include a digital rear-view mirror, configurable ambient lighting, illuminated scuff plates, heated and ventilated front seats, and even seat massages for both front passengers. Somewhat inconveniently, the massage controls are buried in the menu, making them tricky to access while driving.

Features unique to the Sports Luxury model include a head-up display, a coolbox in the center console, and sunshades for the second row. While climate controls are located on the touchscreen, Lexus retains physical dials for temperature control, which is a relief. However, the placement of the camera view button is odd, as it gets blocked by the steering wheel.

You’ll appreciate the spaciousness of the cabin, with generous headroom even in the third row, which surprisingly offers ample space for adults. The third-row seats deploy electrically and fold flat without the bulky 48-volt mild-hybrid system present in the Land Cruiser Prado.

One disappointing aspect is the audio system. The GX 550 Sports Luxury features a standard 21-speaker Mark Levinson setup, including a sizeable subwoofer in the rear door. Expectations were high, but unfortunately, the sound quality fails to impress, coming off as tinny and lacking warmth.

The Panoramic View Monitor with a See-through View mode allows a clear view of what’s beneath the vehicle, a valuable feature for off-road adventures. Additionally, the panoramic glass roof can transition from clear to opaque at the touch of a button.

    Power to Conquer

When compared to the Land Cruiser Prado’s 2.8-liter turbo-diesel four-cylinder, the GX 550’s 3.4-liter V6 brings a refreshing energy boost. It’s precisely the type of engine that fits snugly in a vehicle of this size, effortlessly propelling the SUV from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in under 7 seconds.

With a 10-speed automatic transmission, this engine delights with a satisfying sound, especially when engaged in Dynamic mode. I never once felt a void from missing the previous V8 engine.

Although some engine sound in Dynamic mode is artificially produced through the speakers, it’s convincing enough to make you want to press the throttle just to enjoy it. The Prado could certainly benefit from an engine like this, as its underwhelming performance puts the GX in a favorable light.

The 10-speed auto transmission of the GX outshines the Prado’s 8-speed unit, providing quicker, smoother shifts. However, fuel efficiency remains a concern, with Lexus claiming an average of 12.3 liters per 100 km (19.1 US mpg). In reality, I achieved an average of 16 liters per 100 km (14.7 US mpg), which isn’t particularly impressive compared to the larger Nissan Patrol Warrior’s 5.6-liter V8.

Yet, for buyers of the GX, the cost of fuel likely won’t be a major deterrent.

Multiple drive modes are available and an option to start in second gear, beneficial for slippery conditions. Unfortunately, the Luxury and Sports Luxury versions lack off-road-specific modes, with only the Overtrail model equipped with Dirt, Sand, Mud, Deep Snow, and Rock modes. Off-road capabilities for the Sports Luxury are limited to H4 and L4 modes and a locking center diff, along with a towing mode.

On the highway, the GX 550 performs admirably. Its variable suspension absorbs bumps effortlessly, creating a comfortable ride. The steering is well-tuned for easy maneuverability, making it surprisingly agile through turns.

While the Overtrail model is geared for serious off-roading, the Sports Luxury doesn’t shy away from tough terrains. Despite the larger 22-inch wheels and road-oriented tires, our test vehicle navigated moderate trails with ease, although its size and weight are always present.

    Verdict

The new GX 550 impresses with minimal shortcomings. Lexus has crafted an exceptionally designed vehicle with a cabin that matches its premium price tag. While there’s room for added luxury, the brand has tactfully stayed clear of overshadowing the LX, maintaining a reasonable distinction between the two.

The GX 550 also benefits from Lexus’ solid reputation for reliability and offers a powertrain that fits seamlessly with its construction. In a market segment often divided between comfort and practicality, this model elegantly combines both attributes.
