Why the BYD Sealion 7 Could Challenge Tesla’s Dominance in the EV Market

    BYD Sealion 7

BYD has made remarkable strides in the automotive world, evolving from a little-known brand to a dominant player in the realm of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs). In fact, this innovative company has surpassed even Tesla in the sales of pure battery-electric vehicles in a short span of time, marking a significant milestone in its journey.

This swift ascendance is attributed to BYD’s impressive lineup of new models that consistently hit the market. Unlike many traditional car manufacturers that require years for research and development, BYD leverages its agility as a relatively young entrant in the automotive field, alongside the robust resources of China’s extensive automotive supply chain. It seems like there’s always a buzz surrounding a new model, whether it’s under BYD’s own name or from its subsidiaries like Denza or YangWang.

One of BYD’s standout models in the Australian market is the Sealion 7. While the name might evoke images of whimsical characters, this SUV is marketed as a formidable competitor to the Tesla Model Y. The burning question is whether it can truly hold its ground against such a well-established rival, or if it merely joins the ever-growing list of challengers to Tesla. I had the opportunity to spend a week with this SUV to find out its true capabilities.

    Price That Challenges Tesla

In Australia, the Sealion 7 is priced to attract attention, starting at AU$54,990 ($36,200) for the entry-level Premium variant and reaching up to AU$63,990 ($42,100) for the Performance model in which I drove. This Performance model does not skimp on luxury, comfort, or speed.

The Sealion 7’s starting price makes it substantially more appealing compared to Tesla’s offerings. For instance, the Model Y Long Range All-Wheel Drive has a starting price of AU$68,900 ($45,400), while the Performance variant begins at a whopping AU$89,400 ($58,900).

The Sealion 7’s Performance variant boasts an 82.56 kWh lithium-iron phosphate battery, powering dual electric motors that generate a staggering 523 hp (390 kW) and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque. These figures are notably impressive, even surpassing the 510 hp (380 kW) and 580 Nm (423 lb-ft) available in the costlier 2025 Audi SQ6 e-tron that I evaluated recently.

    A Surprisingly Opulent Interior

Considering the SUV’s competitive price point, one might expect a lackluster cabin. However, BYD defies those expectations, demonstrating that premium materials and quality finishes are not exclusive to German manufacturers. The interior of the Sealion 7 gives off a decidedly upscale vibe.

At the heart of the cabin experience is a large 15.6-inch infotainment display that is both functional and eye-catching, capable of switching between portrait and landscape orientations. Although it stands out due to its unique placement, the software runs smoothly, providing sharp visuals and essential functionalities, including climate control and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

However, it was the overall fit and finish that truly impressed. Soft-touch leather and suede adorn the dashboard, steering wheel, and door panels, with high-quality materials extending into the seating and center console. While the shiny piano black finish on the dashboard panel may not appeal to all, the overall aesthetic is quite pleasing.

The Sealion 7 also greets passengers with numerous modern conveniences, including a 50W wireless charger, adjustable cup holders, and a panoramic glass roof equipped with a power-operated shade. Rear passengers will find ample room, with generous head and legroom, thanks to the thoughtful design.

    Performance and Range

With its impressive figures of 523 hp and 690 Nm, the Sealion 7 promises exhilarating performance. BYD claims it can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.5 seconds. Although it may lag a second behind the Tesla Model Y Performance, the Sealion 7 remains quick, particularly considering its considerable weight of 2,340 kg (5,158 lbs).

BYD states that the Sealion 7 can achieve a range of up to 456 km (283 miles) on a full charge under the WLTP cycle, but my experience suggested a more optimistic expectation had been given. In reality, I averaged around 20.5 kWh/100 km, leading to an estimated real-world range of approximately 400 km (258 miles)—not quite the standout figure one might hope for.

Charging speed is another area where the Sealion 7 could improve. While it supports DC fast charging at up to 150 kW, it requires about 32 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 percent. While many owners can conveniently recharge overnight at home, it is still something to consider when on longer journeys.

    Handling and Comfort

When it comes to driving dynamics, the Sealion 7 has room for improvement. The vehicle tends to understeer, despite the quality Michelin Pilot Sport EV tires. Enthusiasts seeking a thrilling driving experience may find it lacking, but, realistically, most crossover buyers prioritize comfort and utility, areas where the Sealion 7 excels.

The ride comfort is another aspect to consider. While acceptable, it can feel a touch firm—developers might benefit from fine-tuning for better smoothness. My experience revealed minor wind noise from the driver’s side at higher speeds, an issue not commonly found in its rivals.

    Final Thoughts

Although there are aspects of the Sealion 7 Performance that need refinement, it remains a strong contender offering great value for money in the competitive electric SUV market. Its impressive cabin quality and comfort were surprises that rival more expensive European options. While the long-term durability remains to be seen, for now, the Sealion 7 holds its own as a commendable alternative to the likes of Tesla, marking BYD’s growing influence in the automotive landscape.
